Mt. Lanaya is covered with secondary forest, apart from a dense of patch of tall (over 25m) lowland forest trees in the gulleys near the peak, which covers c. 20 ha. Patches of agroforests and coconut plantation cover most of the lower slopes of the mountain. The mountain is surrounded with limestone hills covered with secondary forest and dense scrub and bamboo similar to that found on Mt. Kangbulagsing (nearby mountain range). The Black Shama (Copsychus cebuensis) has been noted to inhabit the mountain (Mallari, Tabaranza Jr. and Crosby, Key Conservation Sites in the Philippines). With almost 600m altitude, the peak of Mt. Lanaya provides a breathtaking view of the town of Alegria, and the neighboring towns of Malabuyoc and Badian. You can climb the mountain from its base or via Lumpan Alegria, Cebu. The (St. Francis Xavier) parish exhibit last Suroy-Suroy Sugbu (January 22, 2009) was featured on January 25, 2009 issue of Cebu Daily News.  Titled "Alegria town shows its ancient church treasures", author Doris C. Bongcac narrated her experiences seeing decades-old images of St. Michael the Archangel, Sta. Rosa, San Roque, Sto. Nino among others.


Bongcac described Alegria as "rich in centuries-old religious images, musical instruments, and probably gold."

LGUS UNITE TO PROTECT TAÑON STRAIT

THE Cebu Provincial Government, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources,
the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office,
24 local government units (LGUs) and 176 coastal barangays all signed a memorandum
of agreement (MOA) last Feb. 11 for the protection and management of Tañon Strait.


They said they should be represented in the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB),
as mandated by Republic Act (RA) 7586, as well as take an active role in the management
of the Tañon Strait Protected Seascape (TSPS), as they are the concerned parties.

RA 7586, also known as National Integrated Area Systems (Nipas) Act, constituted
PAMB to undertake the administration and management of nationally-protected areas,
which includes the TSPS.
