LGUS UNITE TO PROTECT TAÑON STRAIT

THE Cebu Provincial Government, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources,
the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office,
24 local government units (LGUs) and 176 coastal barangays all signed a memorandum
of agreement (MOA) last Feb. 11 for the protection and management of Tañon Strait.
They said they should be represented in the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB),
as mandated by Republic Act (RA) 7586, as well as take an active role in the management
of the Tañon Strait Protected Seascape (TSPS), as they are the concerned parties.
RA 7586, also known as National Integrated Area Systems (Nipas) Act, constituted
PAMB to undertake the administration and management of nationally-protected areas,
which includes the TSPS.
